10 tips to make you water smart
It doesn’t take a lot of effort or hassle to save water. Here are 10 easy-to-follow ways to look after water at home:
A dripping tap can waste up to 60 baths full of water a year. So if you spot a drip, fix it!
Pipes can cause problems. Lag them to prevent bursts and to prevent pipes freezing, leave your heating on a low while you are out in cold weather.
Brushing your teeth with the tap running wastes almost 9 litres a minute! Use a tumbler of water instead.
Water the garden in the evening, when less water will be lost through evaporation. And use a watering can rather than a hosepipe or a sprinkler
Don't use your washing machine until you've got a full load. A full load uses less water than two half loads.
If you are buying a new washing machine or dishwasher, look for one which is A- rated for water and energy efficiency.
Taking a shower rather than a bath saves a lot of water.
Collect rain to use in your garden - a water butt will do the trick.
Only boil as much water as you need in your kettle. This saves water and energy.
Try using a Hippo Bag in your toilet. This ingenious device, which fits in your cistern, could save you water and money!
