Climate change

Across the world our climate is changing and it is causing problems for people everywhere. Learn more about climate change and how it could affect you.

Did you know?…

1 Climate describes the weather of a location over a long time. Examples of different climates are tropical, temporate, dry and arid. We live in a temperate climate in Wales.

2 Our planet is warming up because we have a blanket of greenhouse gases around it, that blanket is getting thicker and so the Earth is getting warmer.

3 The burning of fossil fuels like oil and coal cause greenhouse gases to escape into the air and these gases are causing most of the warming.

4 Deforestation (cutting down trees) is a concern of Welsh Waters as tree soak up a lot of water which can help prevent flooding in certain areas. This excess water goes down the drains and into the sewers which increases the amount of water that needs treatment before it’s returned to the rivers and sea.

5 In the UK it is predicted that our summers will become hotter and drier and our winters will become much wetter and not so cold.

6 If the warming gets worse, as scientists expect, there may be some kinds of plants and animals that become extinct (disappear completely) because they can’t move to new homes. There may be more storms and floods which could cause many problems for people living near rivers and the coast.
