Weird but true: there's no such thing as new water
The water cycle is the never-ending journey that water takes as it circulates from clouds to the land to the ocean and back again. This is nature’s way of cleaning and recycling all the water on earth – it’s this fresh water that make life on earth possible.
And because of the way the cycle works – it’s known as a ‘closed system’ – meaning there’s no new water on the planet. The fact is, we are actually drinking the same water that the dinosaurs drank!
1 The heat from the sun causes the liquid water to change into a gas called water vapour. This is called evaporation.
2 Water vapour rises into the air and cools. This cooling changes it back into liquid water. This is called condensation.
3 Water falls back to the earth as rain, hail, sleet or snow. This is called precipitation.
4 Water flows from the land to the sea through streams and rivers as the water cycle continues.
5 Plants and trees play an important part in the water cycle. Water is taken up by the roots and evaporates from the leaves. This is called transpiration.
